Donna Dimitrova

Director, ballet teacher and choreographer of Prima Donna ballet school

Donna Dimitrova founded Prima Donna ballet school in 2024 to create a school where children receive in-depth dance training, personal attention and opportunities to develop. Her teaching combines the demands of classical ballet with careful consideration of each student’s age, character and needs.

Education and professional training

She began studying classical ballet in early childhood with Vanya Roshkova. In 2021, she graduated from the National School of Dance Art in Sofia, specialising in Classical Dance in the class of Ivanka Kasabova, a soloist of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, and obtained the professional qualification of Ballet Dancer.

In 2025, she completed a bachelor’s degree in Ballet Art — Ballet Pedagogy at the Prof. Asen Diamandiev Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. At the same academy, she has completed the coursework for master’s programmes in Ballet Pedagogy and Ballet Directing, with graduation still forthcoming.

Alongside her dance education, she is in the final stage of a bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski.

She holds certificates for all three levels of Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), as well as Progressing Contemporary Technique (PCT). These qualifications enrich her work on physical preparation, control and conscious execution of movement.

During her training, she has worked with teachers and artists including Vanya Roshkova, Ivanka Kasabova, Elitsa Lukanova, Marta Petkova, Kalina Bogoeva, Antoaneta Aleksieva, Riolina Topalova and Angelina Gavrilova.

Stage experience

As a school student, she performed in Sofia Opera and Ballet productions including The Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadère. She also appeared in productions of the Stefan Makedonski State Music and Ballet Centre: A Night in Venice, Sunset Boulevard and The Little Match Girl.

For two consecutive years, she took part in Encho Keryazov’s Night of the Stars show, presented at Arena Armeec in Sofia and the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv.

During her school years, she participated in dance competitions including the international semi-final of Youth America Grand Prix in Paris. Her awards include first- and third-degree distinctions at the Little Stars International Ballet Competition, fifth place at Movmnt International Dance Competition and first place at Sofia Open Dance Festival.

Teaching and creative work

She began teaching classical ballet at Vaya Dance Studio in December 2020. Working with children became the main direction of her professional development, and in 2024 she founded Prima Donna ballet school.

As a teacher and choreographer, she prepares students for concerts, international competitions and world dance finals. Under her guidance, students of the school have won prizes and scholarships for further training.

She pays particular attention to choosing repertoire, technical preparation and artistic interpretation. She prepares children for the stage with the understanding that every appearance should contribute to their long-term development.

Her creative projects with Prima Donna ballet school include the original concert productions Christmas for Everyone and Christmas Around the World. They allow students to take part in a complete stage narrative and experience the preparation of a production, from the first rehearsals to meeting the audience.

Approach to teaching

For Donna Dimitrova, good teaching requires clear goals, consistency and trust between teacher and student. She encourages children to understand movements, apply corrections and gradually take greater responsibility for their own work.

She combines attention to technique and discipline with support for individual expression. Her aim is for students to build confidence through the skills they acquire, value their effort and retain their curiosity and love of dance.
