About the school

Students and teacher in the Prima Donna studio

A classical foundation. A contemporary outlook. Attention to every child.

Prima Donna ballet school is a school for classical ballet and contemporary dance in the heart of Sofia, founded by ballet teacher and choreographer Donna Dimitrova.

Our aim is to bring a professional approach to dance education within a private school: a consistent programme, clear expectations and personal attention to each student. We give children the opportunity to discover different dance styles, build a solid foundation and develop their skills according to their abilities, interests and aspirations.

Our philosophy

We believe that dedicated training and the joy of dance grow together. Children find satisfaction in mastering a movement, understanding the music and gaining confidence through their own efforts.

We teach with a clear direction and patience. We pay attention to detail, explain the purpose of exercises and help students gradually work with greater awareness and independence.

For some, ballet remains a cherished part of childhood; for others, it becomes an ambition to pursue dance professionally. Both deserve high-quality teaching and a responsible approach.

Classical ballet class at Prima Donna

Training with a solid foundation

Classical ballet is the foundation of our work. Teaching follows the principles of Agrippina Vaganova’s method, with the material and pace adapted to the age and preparation of the students.

We work consistently on placement, coordination, musicality and precision. As technical skills develop, we also build artistry, expression and an understanding of performance style.

The school’s programmes include contemporary dance and jazz, classical ballet and repertoire, character and historical dance, and specialised physical preparation. We also use Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) and Progressing Contemporary Technique (PCT), which develop body awareness and control in support of dance technique.

Each discipline contributes to the development of a well-prepared and expressive dancer.

Standards in everyday details

The ballet uniform, neatly secured hair and being ready for the start of class are part of the culture at Prima Donna ballet school. They create a sense of belonging and help children recognise their time in the studio as time for focused work.

We encourage respect for teachers and fellow students, and a responsible approach to studio work. Children learn to listen to corrections, apply them and persevere when something takes more time.

Professional standards begin with us: in how we prepare lessons, attend to movement and communicate with each child.

Attention to individual development

Every child arrives with different experience, character and pace of learning. We place children in groups according to age and level of preparation, and offer individual guidance and corrections to help each student learn and progress.

For the youngest children, music, playful exercises and imagination help build coordination, attention and the first habits of taking part in a lesson. More structured technical tasks and higher expectations are introduced gradually.

For experienced students who want intensive training, the Advanced programme offers more in-depth preparation. Individual lessons provide additional work on specific technical tasks, repertoire and acting skills.

The stage as part of learning

Concerts and competitions give students the opportunity to present what they have learned, gain experience in front of an audience and discover the responsibility of performing on stage.

Prima Donna ballet school students perform in Bulgaria and abroad, earning prizes and scholarships at international ballet and dance competitions. Meeting other schools and teachers broadens their view of dance and inspires them to keep developing.

We choose repertoire and appearances according to the students’ preparation. Stage work builds on their core training, and each performance is a step in a longer process of growth.

A place to belong

Alongside studio skills, children build friendships, trust and shared memories. Rehearsals, the excitement of the stage and travelling together teach them to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes.

We want every student to feel part of the school: their effort noticed, their difficulties met with encouragement and their progress recognised.

This is what Prima Donna ballet school means to us: a place where a love of dance finds direction, and a commitment to quality is present in every lesson.
